Meet the Rocket City Trash Pandas

Published by Dragon's Den Digital on

If you’re new to Huntsville, Alabama, there’s a good chance you’ve already heard of the Rocket City Trash Pandas—or at least seen their unmistakable logo on hats, shirts, and even stuffed raccoons at the airport gift shop. But what exactly is a Trash Panda, and why should you care about this baseball team? Let’s dive in!

The Rocket City Trash Pandas are the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, meaning they’re just two steps away from Major League Baseball. They play at Toyota Field, a state-of-the-art ballpark located in the heart of a bustling entertainment district. Since their debut in 2020, they’ve led the Southern League in attendance every year. Their name is a fan favorite and a core part of their identity—drawing inspiration from Huntsville’s reputation as the Rocket City and its native wildlife. When it was first announced, the pop-culture-inspired moniker made national headlines, and fans from all over flock to grab Trash Pandas gear, from stuffed raccoons to the best-selling cap in all of minor league baseball.

More Than Just Baseball

The Trash Pandas don’t just put on a game—they create a full entertainment experience. Whether it’s a group night, a giveaway, or a special guest appearance, nearly every night offers something unique. Certain games are must-see events, including the always-special opening and closing nights. This year, fans can look forward to a Huntsville Stars tribute night featuring José Canseco, as well as appearances from beloved children’s characters like Bluey and Bingo. “We’ve got more appearances this year than we’ve ever done in the past,” Fernandez said.

With Huntsville’s strong military presence, patriotic games are always a big draw. The Fourth of July game—this year on July 3rd—attracts nearly 8,000 fans and features a spectacular fireworks show. Another fan-favorite event? Princess Night, where hordes of local kids come out to dress up as royalty and parade around the field.

This season, the team is hosting all kinds of giveaways and special events, including a long-haired bobblehead giveaway—”One of our pitchers last season had this long blonde mane, kind of looked like Thor, so we ran with it,” Fernandez said. There are also loads of exciting theme nights to make sure everyone has something to look forward to. Trash Pandas games are more than just sporting events—they’re a social experience where the sense of community runs deep. “There are over a hundred people working here on game days—ushers, ticket takers, security, the promotions team,” said Fernandez. “Everyone gets to know each other.”

Season ticket holders form the backbone of the Trash Pandas community, with a waiting list for ticket packages forming even before the team played its first game in 2020. Some dedicated fans even have unique gimmicks or nicknames and frequently appear on the big screen during games. But newcomers can easily find their place, too. “There’s definitely a sense of unity,” Fernandez said. “We’ve got plenty of different seating areas, so if you just want to sit in the seating bowl, enjoy the baseball game, maybe keep score, we can do that. If you want to come out with friends, have a couple of cold beverages, we’ve got great areas for that. If you want to bring out everyone from work and rent out, you know, 300 seats with food included, we’ve got that. No matter what you’re trying to do out here, we’ve got a way to bring you into the community and help you have fun with others.”

A Top-Tier Sports Experience

Of course, it’s not just the fun atmosphere that draws people in—the Trash Pandas also showcase serious baseball talent. Double-A baseball is one of the most exciting levels of minor league play, blending solid career players with fresh prospects on the cusp of the major leagues. “I’ve heard a lot of people say Double-A baseball is the best brand of minor league baseball out there,” Fernandez said. With a mix of seasoned professionals and rising stars, there’s always the chance of watching a future MLB standout in action. The team celebrated its one-millionth fan last year with a big giveaway and has even more highlights planned for its 5th anniversary this season.

Huntsville Gets Lots of Love

The atmosphere at Toyota Field makes the Trash Pandas a sought-after team for players. The enthusiastic crowds and high-energy setting create an electric experience. “When they come here, it’s kind of like a taste of the major leagues before they get there,” Fernandez explained. “Sometimes you go on the road, and you’re playing in front of 100 or 200 people. So when you come here on a Friday or Saturday night and it’s sold out, and there’s people screaming and there’s noise on the video board and the lights are flickering … you know, it’s a whole other atmosphere that you are not guaranteed to get in many other places. I don’t think there’s anywhere like it in our league.”

. The Los Angeles Angels, who assign the Trash Pandas’ roster each year, also help ensure players feel at home in Huntsville. “Some of the guys, when they get done playing for the Trash Pandas or they’re done playing baseball altogether, they move here because they like the area so much,” Fernandez said. The Angels also run a program called “Real Life Fridays,” which takes players to local landmarks like Redstone Arsenal, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and local businesses to explore potential careers after baseball.

So—what are you waiting for?

The Trash Pandas’ season runs from April to mid-September, with home games Tuesday through Sunday. But Toyota Field isn’t just a one-team stadium—it also hosts college baseball games, concerts, and even Christmas light shows in the off-season. “There’s barely a weekend all year where we don’t have something going on,” Fernandez said.
